Pentagon press secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder spoke to reporters after the U.S. shot down a "high-altitude object" over Alaska airspace on Friday. "The object was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight," said National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby, who confirmed the news at Friday's White House briefing. The incident comes after the U.S. shot down a Chinese spy balloon off the South Carolina coast after it transited across the country last week.
