DIY Canvas Tool/Chisel Roll with Built In Leather Strop | Old Town Fabrication & Design

In this video I'll be making a tool roll to hold my chisels.

I do quite a lot of work away from my workshop so having a way to transport my chisels without the edges getting damaged is quite important. I decided to make a tool roll with a built in strop, space for a diamond sharpening stone and some mineral oil - everything I need to keep my chisels sharp. Diamond stones work better with water, but a light oil works too and that way I don't have to worry about rust on the chisels.

The material I used is a 16oz cotton duck canvas. It's a very strong and heavy duty fabric, so it will be perfect for this application. I started by laying out the chisels to work out how big to make the tool roll. I cut the back panel out along with two additional pieces to serve as the pockets, plus a length of cotton webbing to wrap around the tool roll to keep it closed. I will be keeping the tool roll in my larger tool box and it will inevitably get dirty over time so I wanted to dye the fabric to try and hide some of the stains it will pick up. I added some dark brown fabric dye to a bucket of hot water and submerged the pieces of fabric for 30 minutes, stirring regularly. I intentionally scrunched up the fabric before adding it to the dye. Doing this allows less of the dye to get to some parts and more to others, adding additional texture to the fabric.

After drying I cut the pieces to their final size and began to sew. This was a big challenge for me. I'm definitely not great with a sewing machine, and I struggle to imagine things in 3D in my head, so working out which way to sew things and in what order was a challenge, but I got there in the end.

After sewing everything up I cut a piece of leather to make the built in strop. I attached this using double cap rivets. These will hold well enough but if I ever need to replace the strop they can be popped off with a flat head screw driver. I also had the idea to have the strop serve as a pocket for the sharpening stone. I charged the strop with some green polishing compound, and applied some heat with a heat gun. This helps to work the polishing compound deep into the leather, making it more effective and longer lasting.

I intentionally left a couple of extra pockets so I can add two tools that I'm going to make in the future. The first one is a marking knife. The second is a special type of chisel that is completely flat along the back, allowing you to register it against a surface and chisel right into corners etc. I'll be making videos on both of these so make sure you subscribe to the channel and hit the bell icon to get notifications when these videos are released.
