Tari Srimpi Anglir Mendhung is a very ancient Javanese dance with several levels of meaning. On the spiritual level, the slow movements refer to yoga and meditation. On the cosmological level, the Javanese system involves the following: two opposed objects - yin and yang; five directions - north, south, east, west and center. The directions are connected to the natural elements, aspects of human experience, and colors. East is connected to water, the color white and passiveness; South to fire, the color red, anger and passion; West to wind, the color yellow and sexual passion; North connected to earth, the color black and physical needs (that is, hunger, thirst, sleep.)
Through the use of the four female performers, the dance teaches that the goal is equilibrium, the center. When there are two dancers facing each other, conflict is being represented. It is resolved when the four dancers reunite. When the dancers separate into three and one, the three represent the three principles of creation, maintenance and destruction. The one represents the supreme principle of Divine Oneness.
