On August 24, 2024, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a decisive announcement — India will be free from Left Wing Extremism by March 31, 2026.

Since then, the Modi government has gone into mission mode. Security forces have intensified operations across Maoist-hit regions, delivering repeated blows to what was once India’s biggest internal security threat.

The impact is visible. Left Wing Extremism incidents have fallen by nearly 89% since 2010. Civilian and security force deaths have dropped by over 91%. From 126 affected districts before 2018, only 11 districts remained LWE-affected by October 2025.

States like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh have witnessed sustained security operations, intelligence-led strikes, and mass surrenders. In 2025 alone, 270 Naxals were eliminated, 680 arrested and over 1,200 surrendered.

At the centre of the insurgency is CPI (Maoist), a banned terror organisation under the UAPA. Its armed wing, the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army, has been accused of exploiting tribal and marginalised communities while pursuing violent capture of power.

With just 90 days to go before the government’s self-imposed deadline, the big questions loom large — can Naxalism be eradicated completely? What happens after armed cadres are neutralised? And can hostile forces attempt a revival?
