At the KADEX 2024 international defense exhibition, Hyundai Rotem company said that the testing of the K2 Black Panther main battle tank (MBT) in Romania yielded successful results.

Contract discussions are reportedly underway regarding Romania’s planned acquisition of K2 tanks. The deal is scheduled to be reached as early as 2025.

Previously in May 2024, the K2 tank was tested by the Romanian military at the Smârdan Combat Training Center with satisfactory results.

Hyundai Rotem representatives indicated that the K2 tank acquisition plan is very flexible.

With the initial purchase plan of one battalion, it allows the involvement of the Romanian defense industry in the production process.

Romania itself has stated its plans to acquire around 300 new main battle tanks to replace its aging T-55AM and TR-85 tanks.

Before being interested in acquiring the K2 tank, Romania had signed an agreement with the United States for the purchase of 54 M1A2 Abrams tanks.
