►Lesson Description: *READ Below* and watch the video for some notes. In this lesson I will be showing you how to use the 'ctags' tool to work with VIM, and otherwise improve code completion and be able to jump to definitions. We will also install the tagbar plugin, which will help provide an outline of your program otherwise. tagbar does not necessarily need ctags or tags file, but I found they go together nicely, so I have packed them into this lesson.

First install ctags or universal-ctags:
sudo apt install universal-ctags
Note: On mac you can use 'brew install ctags' or something equivalent.
In order to generate tags, you will run a command such as:
ctags -R .
This will generate a 'tags' recursively from a directory/e/
An option that is also helpful is the '--exclude=pattern' to avoid certain file types
Another important flag is to 'sort' the flags for faster search

In order to install the tagbar plugin we will be using the repo at - - -- https://github.com/preservim/tagbar
Make sure to update your .vimrc file with "Plugin 'preservevim/tagbar'"
Then do a :PluginInstall
:TagbarToggle
This will open and close tagbar
I recommend remapping some keys to open tagbar quickly
Remember ctrl+w, then w
This will quickly switch windows, and I often use this to switch over to the Tagbar window.
From within Tagbar Window
Hitting 'enter' on a tag will take you to it.
Note; Tags will refresh when you save or reload a buffer.
space' will give you a preview of the function
From source code (working with tags in Vim)
ctrl + ]
This takes you to a tag definition
Recall ctrl+o and ctrl+i to quickly jump back
ctrl + t
Note: This is another way to jump back and forth, this jumps you between the 'tag stack'
ctrk + w and then ]
This will open a 'preview' window for you to see the definition of the tag.

I prefer tagbar so far, but there is also taglist if you prefer that as an alternative. Some folks have also had success with gutentags which may be worth looking at.
