The Transience of Life - Simón García

Recorded July 2020 in quarantine for the Bass Works @ Home Faculty Recital.

Since going into lockdown, I have been struck by the way this forced break has re-introduced me to the true feeling of playing for the sake of playing and creating music with no agenda to impress. Unlike many musicians, I have shied away from sharing my playing online, stuck on the notion that only “perfect” material was safe to put on the internet. With this video, take 3/3 and unedited, and hopefully more like it soon, I’m finally putting that idea aside to share something I’ve been working on.

The title of this piece, “The Transience of Life,” made it seem like a fitting piece to learn during the pandemic when it feels like the world is upside down. Like everyone, I had to suddenly change or cancel almost all of my plans starting in late March of this year, which made me appreciate a lot of things in a new way.
This recording is dedicated to the people I care about who I was expecting to see in the last few months but haven’t been able to, which includes my own immediate family and also my Bass Works family. This video has plenty of flaws, but it was recorded with love.
