Kalka to Shimla Toy Train Journey | 52453 Kalka Shimla Express | UNESCO Heritage site Journey 2025
The Kalka to Shimla toy train, officially known as the Kalka–Shimla Express (Train No. 52453), offers one of the most scenic and historically rich railway journeys in India. This narrow-gauge train covers a distance of about 96 kilometers, starting from Kalka at an altitude of 656 meters and ascending to Shimla, which lies at approximately 2,075 meters above sea level. The journey takes around **five to five and a half hours, winding through lush pine forests, deep valleys, and charming hillside villages.
Train No. 52453 typically departs from Kalka around 6:00 AM and arrives in Shimla between 11:00 and 11:30 AM, depending on seasonal and operational factors. It travels at an average speed of just 18 to 20 km/h, making it one of the slowest trains in the country, but deliberately so—allowing passengers to soak in the breathtaking Himalayan landscape. The train stops at several quaint stations along the way, including Dharampur, Barog, Solan, Kandaghat, and Shoghi.
One of the highlights of the journey is passing through Barog Tunnel (Tunnel No. 33), which is the longest tunnel on the route, stretching over 1.1 kilometers. The route includes over 102 tunnels, nearly 900 sharp curves, and around 800 bridges, many of which are still supported by original stone arches from the early 20th century.
Historically, the Kalka–Shimla Railway was built by the British in 1903, primarily to connect their summer capital, Shimla, with the rest of India. The railway was originally operated by steam locomotives and is now powered by small diesel engines. In 2008, the railway was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its unique engineering and historical importance as part of the “Mountain Railways of India.”
The train offers both First Class and Second Sitting (2S) coaches. First Class provides cushioned seating and a more comfortable ride, while Second Sitting is a more rustic and economical choice. Seats on the right-hand side when traveling from Kalka to Shimla offer the best views of the valleys and distant mountains. The train is popular among tourists, especially during the summer season (March to June) for pleasant weather, and winter (December to January) for snow-covered landscapes.
Overall, the journey on train number 52453 is less about reaching the destination quickly and
more about experiencing a slow, nostalgic ride through time and nature. It remains a beloved legacy of colonial engineering and a must-do travel experience in the Indian Himalayas.
