My name is Stephanie Wang and I’m 15 years old. I live in New Jersey and I have been learning erhu since I was seven years old. I remember going to china to visit my grandparents in the summer of 2014. I was curious to see this strange two stringed instrument at their house. My grandma told me it is called erhu. She started playing and showed me the different sounds that it could make. She mimicked the sound of birds chirping, horses neighing, and even played my Chinese name on the instrument. I was so fascinated by this and begged to learn to play. So my grandma signed me up for lessons during the 2 months summer break in china. When I came back to the US, I was lucky enough to find a teacher near my hometown to continue learning Erhu. I also joined Music From China Youth Orchestra since then. It was wonderful to play Chinese music with other kids.

For the first couple of years, I just thought that playing erhu was fun, but now I really enjoy playing it because I have learned how to express emotions using erhu and have explored various styles of songs from the different regions in China. I think that playing erhu as a Chinese kid born in America has made me embrace my culture and has brought me closer to my heritage.

In addition to the erhu I also study and play Cello/大提琴, Liuqin/柳琴, and Zhong Ruan/中阮。
