With a couple railroad tunnels, beautiful trestles crossing streams and rocky ravines, the scenic Tunnel Hill State Trail travels 55 miles through forests, wetlands, farmlands and towns in the rural countryside of southern Illinois. The aptly-named town of Tunnel Hill marks the route’s crest, where a 543 foot tunnel changes in the middle from a gentle uphill into a gradual downhill. The western endpoint of the Tunnel Hill State Trail is at the Barkhausen-Cache River Wetlands Center, in Cypress, which can be accessed by car or bike. We parked in Karnak, across the street from a campground, which has picnic tables and restrooms. After passing underneath US-45, the trail comes to the town of Vienna, where a trailside park has facilities and a fairly large playground. Continuing our way north, the trail entered the Shawnee National Forest and steepened slightly on a 6 mile stretch between Bloomfield and its highest point in Tunnel Hill. Here, as the name suggests, a 543-foot tunnel takes the trail into the days of old of a train clacking through. It was cold and damp going through and would probably be a relief in the summertime from the heat. A flashlight or bike lamp may be necessary during overcast or darker days, but should be used for safety if the trail is busy. I would recommend starting in Karnak and working your way north just in case there is any type of flooding in the northern section past Tunnel Hill.
