In one of the most savage and humiliating showdowns in The Quick and the Dead (1995), the gunslinger tournament reaches a boiling point as Herod (played by Gene Hackman) finally faces off against the arrogant braggart Ace Hanlon. Hanlon has been boasting all over town that he once killed four men in a single day — “two with the left, two with the right.” But Herod isn’t buying the hype.

Standing in the dust-covered ring, Herod asks with a smirk, “Did you really kill four men in one day?”
Hanlon replies smugly, “Yep. Two with each hand.”
Then Herod hits him with a cold truth: “That day... I was there. I killed the Terrence brothers.”
Boom. The bluff is called. The crowd freezes. The duel begins.

With deadly precision, Herod blows out Hanlon’s right hand, rendering it useless. As Hanlon howls in pain, Herod mockingly asks, “Left hand okay?” He gives him a chance — but only to bait his arrogance again. Just as Herod lights a cigarette, Hanlon tries to cheat death by drawing with his left. But Herod’s faster. The left hand is also shot to hell.

Bleeding and defeated, Hanlon crumples. Herod walks up, looks down at the fraud, and delivers a line as cold as steel:
“You’re nothing but a blowhard piece of trash.”
Bang. Hanlon’s story ends — not with glory, but with disgrace.
