On April 5, 2013, The Stanford Law, Science and Technology Program hosted the conference "Design Patents in the Modern World."
Drawing on the experience of lawyers, in-house counsel and academics, the conference explored both practical and policy ramifications of recent changes in the law and from recent high-profile cases like Apple v. Samsung.
In the panel "The Scope of Design Patents" panelists discussed the fallout from Egyptian Goddess; identifying a functional design; the looser "substantial similarity" standard and how it affects design-arounds.
