A simple introduction to one of the various ways we can identify minerals, in this case we look at how each mineral has its own hardness, by performing a scratch test with a set made up from the minerals in this video you can determine the minerals hardness and this will help to identify the mineral. However there are minerals with hardnesses that lay in between these and also some minerals not on the Mohs scale have the same hardness as those that do, so hardness testing is just one of the tests needed to identify a mineral, but its one of the first tests that should be done.
