After surviving on food scraps and begging customers for help at a local gas station all while battling a respiratory infection, sweet kitty Winston was finally rescued. However, after a week in our care, Winston’s condition suddenly deteriorated, prompting an emergency hospitalization when he was found vomiting blood.

When Winston first came into our care, the life of a stray had taken quite a toll on this poor boy’s body, Part Bengal, part Savannah, this unique kitty was first spotted slinking around a local gas station, eating scraps of food out of the trash. Winston was incredibly thin, and never missed an opportunity to bed patrons for bites of their food. One day an independent rescuer in the area came to the gas station by chance, and Winston jumped right into her car as if he knew she could bring him to safety. Unfortunately, the woman could not bring him with her, but she contacted our team in the hopes that we could help.

We agreed to take Winston in and get him the care he needed. This poor boy was suffering from an Upper Respiratory Infection and needed to be quarantined. His eyes were a bit goopy, so we started treatment and kept him separated from the other kitties to prevent the spread of illness. After a few days, Winston began to improve, and we were even able to take him to the vet for an exam and his first round of shots. However, things took a sudden turn about a week after Winston came into our care. Early one morning, we found Winston in his crate vomiting up blood.

We rushed Winston back to the vet, where he was immediately admitted for emergency care. The medical team was able to get him stable, but Winston still didn’t feel up to eating. Nothing in his bloodwork seemed out of the ordinary, and no intestinal obstructions appeared in his X-rays. Winston underwent an exploratory surgery, but nothing was found that would explain his symptoms. A biopsy was taken of Winston’s stomach, which was sent out to the lab for testing. Two days later, Winston was able to return to his foster home, but we are still awaiting answers.
