Muddu Babu Shetty (1931 – 23 January 1982) simply known as, M. B. Shetty or Shetty was an Indian film stuntman and action choreographer and actor in Hindi cinema in 1970. He had a towering personality with a bald head, often cast as the villain brought down by heroes half his size.

He was born in Mangalore, India. He came to Bombay from Udupi. His mother tongue is Tulu .He started as a waiter in Cotton Green after which he got into boxing and bodybuilding.

His first wife was Vinodini, with whom he had two daughters and two sons. With his second wife, Ratna, he had another son, the film director Rohit Shetty.

Muddu (Mudhu) Babu (Balwant) Shetty is an Indian stuntman of the 1970s. He is popularly known as Shetty, Fighter Shetty, Fight Master Shetty, and MB Shetty. Shetty’s father decided to send him to Mumbai (referred to as Bombay in those times) so that he can learn any skill which can guard him against adversities. So, from Udupi, he came to Mumbai. At Mumbai, Shetty worked as a waiter for a Tata Company canteen at Cotton Green. Shetty was blessed with a good physique and soon started boxing. Soon, Shetty became a champion in boxing and won tournaments for eight years.

After this, he joined the film industry as a body double. He also learned sword fighting and horse riding from Azim Bhai, the villain, with a bald head and towering physique, in the movies. MB Shetty acted as the body double of famous heroes of the 1950s like Pradeep Kumar and Premnath. He was spotted by Pran, a famous Bollywood veteran actor, who saw his potential as an actor. Pran convinced the director Subodh Mukherjee to give Shetty a chance to be the fight director in Munimji- a 1955 Bollywood romantic film.

Munimji was Shetty’s first independent break to work as a fight director. Afterward, he worked as an action coordinator, fight composer, stunts coordinator, and stunt master in various upcoming films. Some of these films are Ujala of 1959, Tel Malish Boot Polish of 1961, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai of 1961, Kashmir Ki Kali of 1964, Teesri Manzil of 1966, An Evening In Paris of 1967, Seeta Aur Geeta of 1972, Don, The Great Gambler, Bombay 405 Miles, and Deewar. Shetty did over 700 films as an action director.

Not only has Shetty been the Action Director of movies, but he has also acted in some Kannada and Bollywood movies, such as C.I.D 909, Sapera, China Town, Gunahon Ke Raaste, Aag Aur Daag, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Victoria No. 203, Anthony, Don, Shalimar, Jail Yatra, and Aaj Ke Sholey. Shetty was mainly fond of street fights sequences that involved soda bottles, hockey sticks, and belts.

On the sets of Bombay 405 Miles, he was in charge of an action scene where one junior artist, doubling for the actor Shatrughan Sinha, died in an accident. The petrol bomb went off before the artist, Mansoor, backed off. It is said that during the filming of this scene, Shetty was under the influence of alcohol. After this fateful incident, he took to alcohol in a big way. On 23 January 1982, a fall at home proved fatal, and Shetty died.

After the demise of Shetty, Ratna, and his family were affected to a large extent. Ratna started working as a junior artist again to support her family. Rohit Shetty is now a leading director in the Bollywood industry.
