Political temperatures in Bomet County have surged after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua led a high-profile opposition tour through the region alongside leaders from the emerging United Opposition coalition. The visit, which included rallies in Mulot town and other areas, drew crowds chanting “wantam” and ignited a sharp response from Kenya Kwanza leaders.

During the rallies, Gachagua challenged President William Ruto to fulfill promises made to the people of Bomet and accused some Rift Valley leaders of prioritizing praise for the president instead of pushing development for locals. The opposition framed the visit as part of a wider strategy to reach new regions ahead of the 2027 General Election and present an alternative political direction.

But government allies quickly pushed back. Senior Kenya Kwanza figures including Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura, Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro, UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala, Kericho Governor Erick Mutai, and Bomet Senator Aaron Cheruiyot criticized the tour, accusing the opposition of early campaigning, spreading false narratives, and attempting to stir political tension.
