Former F1 champion rails against Checo Perez

----------------

Former Formula 1 champion Damon Hill harshly criticized Sergio "Checo" Perez after the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, where Perez finished eighth after starting from 11th on the grid. In an interview with Sky Sports, Hill highlighted the discrepancy between Perez's performance and that of his teammate, Max Verstappen, who took victory at the same event.

Hill emphasized that Perez has one of the best cars on the grid, comparing it to McLaren's, but still fails to match Verstappen's pace. "He has the best car in F1 next to McLaren and yet he can't keep up with Max Verstappen. That means there are usually four or five grid positions between him and Verstappen," Hill explained.

The former champion stressed that this performance gap is problematic for Red Bull, as it prevents them from maximizing their points in the constructors' championship and makes it difficult to support Verstappen in his title fight. "It's really disastrous for Red Bull if they want to get maximum points, let alone if they want to be able to support Verstappen. But he simply can't get anywhere near the pace," Hill added.

Hill's criticism reflects a general concern at Red Bull about Perez's consistency and performance compared to his teammate, especially in a season where every point is crucial to maintaining a lead over his competitors.
