Held over 3 days, the 1st IUCN World Environmental Law Congress was hosted in the Supreme Court of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 27 - 29 April 2016. The format included keynote speakers, plenary sessions on trends and challenges in environmental law, and three interactive sessions on sub-themes that aligned with the Congress objectives and analyzed: 1) The current state of environmental law, including gaps in legal frameworks at the international, regional, national and sub-national levels, covering not only legal tools and systems but also issues of practical implementation. 2) Necessary mechanisms and frameworks to fill gaps in environmental law, including innovative legal tools and emerging principles. 3) Strategies for developing and implementing the necessary mechanisms and frameworks, including short and long term priorities and actions.
