In this first session of 2021 we host a more traditional journal club ourselves, in which we summarise a paper by Makin & Orban de Xivry (2019) titled "Science Forum: Ten common statistical mistakes to watch out for when writing or reviewing a manuscript". https://elifesciences.org/articles/48...

Statistics are for many researchers a key element of their work. This element of research, due to its complexity, is particularly sensitive to a lack of transparency. If published research is unclear about the (inappropriate) statistical methods used, it can harm reproducibility and cloud research findings. Transparency and having open (critical) discussions about statistics are key to increase our understanding of and make solid contributions to the research field. Therefore we thought it would be good to start the year with a brief stats refresh! We are not experts on statistics ourselves, but we will point to several resources on statistics available at the University of Edinburgh and in the public domain.

Also we have Dr. Ailith Ewing join us in this session to talk about the IGMM Statistical Seminar Series that she co-organised in 2020, as well as some new initiatives she is involved in. https://media.ed.ac.uk/channel/IGMM%2... (available to UoE students or staff only - for now anyways!)
