How to change the transmission gearbox oil in a manual Porsche Cayman 987 & check the oil condition

Porsche Cayman 987 Manual transmission gearbox oil change, DIY How to change it at home. This is a straight forward easy job with a few tools required. A fluid pump will make it easier but if you don't have one, you could us some long hose and hold the bottle up above the transmission so the oil will gravity fill the transmission.

It's good practice to take a sample of the oil you drain out, so you can inspect it. It can be normal to see a few specks of metal, like glitter but you shouldn't have an excessive amount. Larger metal bits would indicate some wear to either a gear or synchro ring.

The filling quantity is 3.2 litres and uses a 75W90 grade oil for the gen 2 987.2 3.4l engine, gearbox code G87.40

The base gen2 2.9 engine, gearbox code G87.10 filling quantity is 3 litres, same grade oil.

Filling quantity in the gen1 987.1 is 2.8l, the process is the same and same grade oil.

G87.01 5 speed 2.7
G87.21 6 speed

Another oil recommendation is the Castrol TRANSMAX Manual Transaxle 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Transaxle Fluid

I would recommend replacing the drain and filling plugs, these are less than £2 from a Porsche centre. Tightening torque is 25nm. If you are reusing the plug tighten to 40nm

I used Motul Gear 300 75w-90 which is a fully synthetic, ester based, extreme pressure lubricant for all manual transmissions of high performance and racing cars. This oil meets the following specifications, API GL4, API GL5 and MIL-L-2105D.

The genuine oil from Porsche only comes in 20 litre bottle so if you have a good relationship with your local OPC they may give you a few litres.

The Laser 4385 Multi Purpose Mini Pump is a great tool to help pump the oil into the gearbox, plus can be used for other jobs.
