Despite ample research showing the efficacy and safety of taking many common psychotropic medications while breastfeeding, numerous mothers are told to stop taking their medication or stop breastfeeding altogether. However, these directives can lead to negative early breastfeeding experiences that can contribute to depressive symptoms. In this monthly provider seminar, Thalia Robakis, MD, Ph.D., will cover basic findings of medication use and lactation and risk/benefit analysis of breastfeeding while taking common psychotropic medications.

About Thalia Robakis M.D., Ph.D:
Dr. Robakis is a psychiatrist with clinical and research experience in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. She completed her M.D. as well as a Ph.D. in developmental neurobiology at Columbia University’s Medical Scientist Training Program, residency training in psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine, and a research fellowship in perinatal mood disorders also at Stanford. She is an expert in the management of psychiatric disorders in pregnancy and the postpartum period. She takes a holistic approach to patient care, including providing or recommending behavioral, psychosocial, psychotherapeutic, pharmacological, and neurostimulator interventions as necessary and appropriate for each mother/infant dyad.
