“The works started September 30th this year and lasted less than three months. In three months we accomplished the objective we had established, that is to conduct maintenance works to the part of the frontal part, the steps. We have redone the waterproofing, as you can see the color is different from before the works, we fixed and cleaned the pool-side that as you can see returned to the look it had after the renovation works. We fixed the stairs and the brick curtain, all the elevated parts around the fountain, we also removed the biological patinas, all the green that was there and all the dirty black edges in all the parts of the fountain.”

STORYLINE:
After undergoing months of maintenance, the iconic Trevi Fountain, one of Rome’s most celebrated landmarks, reopened to the public on Sunday, just in time for the upcoming Jubilee Year, which is expected to draw millions of visitors to the Eternal City.

Tourists can once again toss coins over their shoulders into the Baroque masterpiece, a tradition temporarily halted during the overhaul works.

According to Roman lore, throwing a coin into the fountain guarantees a return trip to Rome.

The restoration was prompted by deterioration caused by the monument’s location in a high-traffic pedestrian area and exposure to specific microclimatic conditions, which led to the formation of biological deposits and limestone buildup on the sections most exposed to water.

The 327,000 euro ($341,000) project, which lasted approximately three months, also included waterproofing the fountain’s basin.

To enhance visitor experience and prevent overcrowding, a new access system has been introduced.

Visitors will now enter via a central staircase, while the exit will be located at a lateral gate. Sitting on the basin’s edge, eating, drinking, and smoking will now be strictly prohibited.

The Trevi Fountain, completed in the early 1800s, is one of the world’s most visited cultural landmarks.

At its center stands the commanding statue of Oceanus, guiding a shell-shaped chariot drawn by two horses restrained by two tritons.
