The Republic of Botswana is a landlocked, mostly desert country in Southern Africa. It has a population of 2.3 million. The capital is Gaborone, and the official languages are English and Setswana. A citizen of Botswana is called a Batswana.

At the time of independence, Botswana had no armed forces. It was only after the Rhodesian and South African armies attacked the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army and Umkhonto we Sizwe bases, respectively, that the Botswana Defence Force was formed in 1977.

Since its independence from being a British protectorate in 1966, Botswana has had one of the fastest growth rates in per capita income globally. Transforming from a poor country with a per capita GDP of US$1,300 to a middle-income country with a GDP per capita of US$15,000 per year. Botswana's economy is dependent on mining which is dominated by diamonds and contributes 40% of the government revenue.

In addition to a stable, growing economy and good living standards, Botswana enjoys a vibrant democracy with strong institutions.

Botswana has some of the best wilderness and wildlife areas on the African continent, with 38% of its total land area devoted to national parks, reserves, and wildlife management. Botswana has Africa’s Highest Concentration Of Elephants.

The Okavango Delta is one of the seven natural wonders of Africa and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana, the Makgadikgadi Pan is one of the largest salt pans in the world.
