Today folks...we're corksniffing!! Here we have two pickups, both wound by the same chap (Matt Gleeson at Monty's in London) and on paper, they're very very similar. The Retro Wind is based on 60's Tele bridges; and the '53 is modelled on a particular p'up from the golden era of 1952-53. Both are scatterwound with 42-gauge wire and both have very similar outputs ('53: 6.2k / Retro Wind: 6.6k).

But there is one important difference - the type of magnet. The '53 packs an AlNiCo V, whereas the Retro Wind houses an AlNiCo III...what difference will this have on the tone (if any)? In theory, the V should have a slightly thicker & more compressed sound, with the III having a little more high-end presence. But is this the case with these two??

What do you think? Any difference at all? Which did you prefer? Which sounds "more like a Tele" to you? Comment below!

Guitar recorded through a Dr Z DB4 (70's MD441) and a Cornell Romany Plus (Aston Spirit Condenser) with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic.
