Route running starts with proper footwork for a wide receiver. For certain routes, such as slants, the first few steps are critical in getting open for the quarterback. The 3-step jab drill is designed to teach receivers proper footwork and aiming points for running a short slant. By setting up cones that represent the path a player should take when running a slant, a player will learn how and where to make the necessary cuts, as well as the correct body control to run a 3-step slant properly.
