Renée K. Van Norman, Ph.D. is the Preschool Director of the Pearl Buck Center in Eugene, Oregon. The Center enriches the lives of those affected by disabilities, and one of their major programs is Pearl Buck Preschool, which provides specialized early education parenting education, support, and case management/outreach for children whose parents have cognitive limitations. The goals are to prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn, to improve the parenting skills of adults with cognitive limitations, and to facilitate their ability to provide a safe, healthy, and stable home.

This webinar focuses on an exciting approach to educating and supporting young children and their families with special learning needs through a wrap-around service delivery model with 60 years of history in the community of Eugene, Oregon. Learn about this Comprehensive Support System highlighting Program-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports designed and implemented to prepare children and their families for the K–12 school system.

Following this webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Articulate the key components necessary for successful implementation of a preschool initiative for children of parents with learning difficulties.

2. Describe practical strategies to support parents with learning difficulties in preparing their children for kindergarten.

3. Describe an application of program-wide positive behaviour interventions and supports (PBIS) for families headed by a parent with learning difficulties and their children enrolled in preschool.
