Modern Challenge 02.09.2023 - Top 8 finish (Highlights)

Round 1, 2-1 vs Jund Saga - Game 1 i had a good turn 2 metalcraft and a hammer hit but i didn't draw much else, and i didn't play around bowmasters when i attacked with my paladin into it, he drew all the answers. During game 2 i was double queueing the Legacy Challenge and was about to top 8, a very sloppy and potenitally critical turn 6 where i should equip nettlecyst to the construct to kill Wrenn, or at least play out the stoneforge instead of hammer.

Round 2, 2-1 vs Izzet Prowess - Again, badly managed game 2 where i'm extremely passive by not playing saga on t2, and on top of that i tutored for sword, which is still a much worse option that cyst. G3 hand is not a surefire keep but i assume i can draw out of my problems easily, i have early interaction for the creatures to slow him down significantly, two combo pieces and a sword. Tormod's Crypt seems like another odd tutor decision, i assume he can have Darcy or arcanist or especially Unholy Heat for the construct, drum or spear may be better, also his empty board is deceptive. Mana Tithe and On Thin Ice shine.

Round 3, 2-0 vs Rakdos Blink - Close games where i come back from behind, first one the saga of the great escape (although at the end the probability of drawing a hammer is huge). Game 2 is conducted by the other equipments. I make an enormous punt by not playing the plating for lethal, if there's any excuse for that is that i played two events at the same time.

Round 4, 0-2 vs Golgari Yawgmoth - Atrocious keeps and game, really not playing too well still.

Round 5, 2-0 vs the great polish player on Izzet Murktide - As i've said many times, Ragavan is often as good as a dead card so i won't trade it with mystic, even if he stole the best possible thing. G2 we can see the power of sword, crypt and ice slowing him down and taking over the game, a very familiar and reliable play pattern vs Murktide.

Round 6, 2-1 vs Mono-Green Tron - G1 long live the 0-mana Memnite! G3 the right name on needle should probably be Karn, the greatest of creators so that he doesn't have access to Ensnaring Bridge. Mana Tithe stopped his Tron.

Round 7, 1-2 vs Dimir Mill - G2 not only is the keep very risky but later on protecting the plating was utterly ridiculous instead of keeping tithe up. Of course, my hope is that he'll keep bricking and i can have metalcraft, then on t7 i play cowardly when i can draw two cards with paladin, likely draw a land and hold up one spell, not that it mattered in that stage. While in g3 i mulled a risky yet a lot more reasonable hand and i had to go to 4. Luucily i still made the top 8 on tiebreakers.

Quarterfinals, 1-2 vs the same player that beat me in the swiss on Golgari Yawgmoth - G1 my hope is to draw a 0-drop and have a t2 11/11 Memnite, however it wouldn't have mattered against the t2 Grist and t3 Yawgmoth on the draw. G3 a medium keep, i have combo pieces and a hate piece but no equipper or interaction. I did draw well, saga into his ouphe and the game became interesting. I made another big mistake - on turn 7 he willingly sacrifies his ouphe yet i do not play Sigarda in the second main phase... he would likely not have exiled it with mite. So on t8 i am not able to equip the spear on something that's big (thus hard for Yawgmoth to kill) AND hold 2 hammers/surge, i try to go for lethal with Ornithopter but he draws out of it. I probably should equip the spear to the germ and maybe play a hammer in the attack step, that way if he wants to sacrifice things in response he might not be able to block the constructs, and if he sacrifices anything that's blocking the germ the trample damage would still go through, he would've drawn the Boseiju but it makes it much harder for him. None of that would've been an issue if i had played Sigarda the previous turn.

Conclusion - sentinels were not missed against the gigantic army of orcs. I did not play well it but i did just enough to qualify for the top 8. And you have to have in mind that i played 16 rounds of Magic Online and made the top 8 in both Legacy and Modern that day, quite a noteworthy feat in this highly competitive environment and it made me very proud at the end of the day.
