I have a fantastic Bunny Cam update… Rabbit mom has resumed feeding the baby bunnies!!!

Many people who find a nest of baby bunnies will often mistakenly intervene because they prematurely decide that the mom has abandoned them. They typically come to this conclusion because they have an incorrect preconceived notion about how often rabbits nurse.

Unbeknownst to most, baby bunnies are the champions of intermittent fasting. Rabbit milk is very nutrient dense. So rabbit moms typically feed their babies just once a day.

Even with this knowledge, I was getting a bit concerned. I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on the babies using the Rabbit Cam and while the mom has returned the nest, she has not nursed the babies for well over 24 hours. I was starting to think I might have to intervene and foster the baby bunnies with the domestic rabbits that I raise.

Finally, after 48 long hours, I received a motion detection notification from my ‪@ReolinkCameras‬ Bunny Cam. I was delighted to discover that the mom had returned AND was nursing the babies! YAY!!!

Due to how nutritious rabbit milk is, feeding sessions are super quick. Despite not having nursed for 48 hours, the baby bunnies filled their little tummies in just 6 short minutes.

The mom hung around for another 5 minutes to groom the babies and then she was off and on her way.
