12/7/18 KPAO: As a student and I were on our takeoff roll on RWY 31, the plane that had just departed ahead of us called tower reporting 'engine roughness' and declared an emergency. The plane in distress requested to land in the opposite direction on the runway, putting us on a head-on course with that plane. Hearing all of this unfold, I was ready to make a call to tower advising we'd be turning an immediate left crosswind but, as it turned out, the tower beat us to the punch by issuing that same instruction. It's nice when everyone is on the same page!
