(22 Feb 2018) STARS OF 'BLACK 47' ON THEIR LOVE OF BERLIN: A 'WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL PLACE'
Lance Daly's new film, "Black 47," is showing at this year's Berlin International Film Festival, and the stars were delighted to spend time in the city.
"I love this place so much," said Hugo Weaving, who likes to stay in the German capital for months at a time, taking in the museums, galleries and theaters. "It's just the most fantastic city and... the sense of history in the streets's really palpable, I think, so it's just a really vibrant, incredibly civilized, wonderful, wonderful place."
Oscar-winning English actor Jim Broadbent agrees.
"I was filming here a few years ago for quite a while and some brilliant galleries - absolutely. Just to absorb the city is such a surprise if you don't know it. I mean, it's... the scale of the spread of it and the parks and.. it's great. It's a wonderful city," said the star of "Game of Thrones" and "Harry Potter."
On a previous visit, Freddie Fox had discovered the abandoned observatory tower of Teufelsberg, which is now a haven for graffiti and street artists, and a popular tourist attraction.
"It's like a contemporary art takeover. It's like a wild kingdom but of street art. It's like Banksy and all his mates got to go and just trip out," said Fox. "It's like a photographic heaven. It's amazing, so you take your camera up there and you just get amazing shots. It's like a dystopic universe world."
The stars also love the food in Berlin. Barry Keoghan was a big fan of German schnitzel, finding it irresistible, though James Frecheville fell for one restaurant's offal dish.
"I tell you what, down at Lutter und Wegner, there's a really great beef liver. I don't think I've ever had liver like that, so I sort of got my nutrients in before we had to do all this, you know," said the Australian actor. "So now, I'm probably just going to keep eating there every day because it's just really, really good."
Set in Ireland in 1847, "Black 47" is a revenge story that takes place at the height of the country's great potato famine.
Feeney (James Frecheville), an Irish soldier who fought with the British Army, abandons his post and returns home, where finds the country and his family destroyed by the famine.
He goes to seek revenge for his loved ones, who were left to die by a greedy landowner (Jim Broadbent.)
When violence erupts, veteran British soldier Hannah (Hugo Weaving) is sent to try and stop him.
"Black 47" is showing out of competition at the 68th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival.
