Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377) was a canon of Rheims Cathedral, remembered as the greatest exponent of Ars Nova (the new way of making music coming from Paris) and the greatest composer of viralais. “Virelai” was a typically medieval dance music, but the new cultural climate opened up the boundaries of music and even those who, like Guillaume, were priests by profession, ended up writing love compositions.
