Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching, Chapter 30 "Contrary to the Tao" (不道章)

The text:

1. 以道佐人主者 - The one who uses the Tao to advise the ruler
2. 不以兵強天下 - Does not dominate the world with soldiers
3. 其事好還 - Such methods tend to be returned (or boomerang)
4. 師之所處 - The place where the troops camp
5. 荊棘生焉 - Thistles and thorns grow
6. 大軍之後 - Following the great army
7. 必有凶年 - There must be an inauspicious year
8. 善有果而已 - A good commander achieves result, then stops
9. 不敢以取強 - And does not dare to reach for domination
10. 果而勿矜 - Achieves result but does not brag
11. 果而勿伐 - Achieves result but does not flaunt
12. 果而勿驕 - Achieves result but is not arrogant
13. 果而不得已 - Achieves result but only out of necessity
14. 果而勿強 - Achieves result but does not dominate
15. 物壯則老 - Things become strong and then get old
16. 是謂不道 - This is called contrary to the Tao
17. 不道早已 - That which is contrary to the Tao soon ends
