The last time MOJO reviewed a Songs Of Green Pheasant LP (2021’s When the Weather Clears) we rather grandly announced that SOGP’s key member, Duncan Sumpner, had made “the defining album of their career”, perhaps assuming that, after two decades in the game, Sumpner was closer to the end than the beginning of his art. The rough-hewn harmonic majesty of *Sings The Passing suggests we were completely wrong. With four songs running over seven minutes, this is a more discursive, expansive, ethereal work than WTWC, its edges rougher, its borders hazier. At times, it suggests a lost masterpiece of 90s Bristolian psychedelia, combining the moorland drones of Flying Saucer Attack with Crescent’s whispered lo-fi introspection.
