2024 Mercedes-Benz C-Class First Drive Review: Entry-Level Luxury Leveled Up

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has long been the brand's gateway into luxury car ownership. For 2024, Mercedes has comprehensively updated the C with fresh styling, an overhauled interior, and the latest tech to make sure its compact sedan doesn't feel entry-level at all. We spent some time with the new C300 4Matic to see if this affordable Benz still delivers a premium experience.

Dressed To Impress
Though it rides on a carryover platform, the 2024 C-Class gets sleeker sheetmetal that borrows heavily from the latest S-Class's design language. The face is smoother and more integrated, replacing the busy look of the old car. Out back, the trunklid and taillights have a classier, more upscale appearance. The overall look is subdued but sophisticated, exactly what you want from a compact luxury sedan.

The interior borders on S-Class levels of opulence too. A stunning 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster flows into an 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, with both displays offering rich graphics and quick response. Material quality is outstanding, with expensive-feeling wood, metal, and leather accenting virtually every surface. We miss Mercedes' old click-wheel controller, but the new touchpad works well enough.

Decent Performance, But Rivals Are More Engaging
Mercedes made the curious choice to carry over the C300's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, adding an integrated starter-generator for a brief power boost. With 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, the C300 provides adequate grunt, hitting 60 mph in 5.3 seconds with 4Matic all-wheel drive. The nine-speed automatic performs seamless gearchanges too.

But the C300's driving experience leaves us wanting more. The ride is overly firm, even in Comfort mode, failing to soak up bumps as gracefully as you'd expect from a Mercedes. Steering is numb and lacks precision, while the mushy brake pedal inspires little confidence. Tossable but not thrilling, the C-Class trails the sharper driving dynamics of rivals like the BMW 3 Series.

Should I Buy A 2024 Mercedes C300?
Despite its dynamic shortcomings, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz C300 has undeniable strengths. Its cabin is a tour de force of luxury, with impressive materials and the brand's latest (and very good) tech interface. Fuel economy is respectable too, with an EPA highway rating of 33 mpg with 4Matic.

At $48,100 to start, the C300 undercuts similarly-sized offerings from BMW, Audi, and Genesis while delivering that unmistakable Mercedes-Benz ambiance. If you value badge prestige and interior opulence above all else in a compact luxury sedan, the C300 remains a compelling – and more affordable – entry into the world of the three-pointed star.
