He was born in Rosario, Argentina on June 14, 1928. He was the oldest of five children in a middle-class family. His parents were political activists. Guevara became a medical student in 1948. He wanted to pursue an engineering career, but after his grandmother's death in 1947, he decided to become a doctor and find a cure for asthma. He completed his medical studies in 1953.
Guevara's worldview was changed by the poverty he saw during a nine-month journey through Latin America in 1951–52. He was a part of the 26th of July Movement in Cuba. He became a revolutionary leader who inspired many and brought the guerrilla to victory in 1959.
Guevara's practical and theoretical work had a profound political impact around the globe during the second half of the 20th century. He has become a persisting symbol for counterculture and revolution through the generations.
