Tornadoes are unpredictable, dangerous storms that usually develop within a supercell thunderstorm — the most severe but least common type of thunderstorm.

As the sun heats the ground, warm air rises, expands, and cools forming clouds. If the atmosphere is unstable, warm air continues to rise developing thunderstorms.

When thunderstorms develop, there’s a difference in wind speed with height, or wind shear. This causes a rolling affect in the atmosphere, producing a horizontal spinning cylinder of air.

Supercell thunderstorms are characterized by having deep, rotating updrafts. The updraft associated with these storms causes the cylinder of air to tilt vertically forming a mesocyclone.

On radar, the mesocyclone is usually found within the “hook” of the supercell thunderstorm, and this is where tornadoes will form.

A cool downdraft battles the warm updraft of the rotating column of air which causes the column to tighten, spin faster, and eventually touch the ground forming a tornado.

Tornadoes vary in size and intensity. Some last a few seconds to over an hour but on average they last less than 10 minutes. Next time, learn about how tornadoes are categorized and the damage caused by these storms.
