Val Kilmer, who had become a leading man in the 1990s with roles in movies such as The Doors and Tombstone, replaced Michael Keaton as Batman in 1995's Batman Forever. The film was directed by Joel Schumacher, who aimed to make a lighter and more comedic version of Batman. While Kilmer did an adequate job, the film's tone was hit-and-miss, and the story was more focused on Jim Carrey's high energy portrayal of The Riddler. Kilmer had a reputation for being hard to work with, and Schumacher admitted that Kilmer's behavior on set was inappropriate and rude. Additionally, Kilmer felt disillusioned with the role after he wore the Batman suit and realized that being Batman did not matter, as he was just a guy in a suit. Despite expectations that he would return for the follow-up film, Batman & Robin, Kilmer had no desire to reprise the role.
