This reel was my first impression of the new Merit solo shadow, but here are my thoughts after using it for a week: LOVE the formula, don’t love the marketing messaging.

On me, this formula is incredibly easy to use and budge proof. It’s a somewhat sheer matte formula that applies like a thin cream and dries down to a matte powder finish. I can easily apply and blend with my fingers, I don’t need a brush, but it also works great with all of my eyeshadow brushes at different price points.

I read a lot of Sephora reviews that said this formula creased and faded badly but I’m pleasantly surprised to say I didn’t have that experience at all! HOWEVER, Merit’s marketing messaging rubbed me the wrong way. They are by no means reinventing eyeshadow. Cream to powder formulas have been round forever so don’t let the marketing fool you - this ain’t anything new. But it is beautiful and I love the product. I also felt like the marketing was a bit condescending, telling consumers they’re basically not skilled enough too use eyeshadow palettes- but don’t you worry! Merit has a solution.

The beauty community knows how to apply eyeshadow, which leads me to feel like the marketing messaging maybe wasn’t supposed to be aimed at us, but more so the type of makeup wearers who only wear a couple products and have very small collections. That’s the only reason I can think of for creating messaging that
