Barcelona's biggest public street festival is back after a two-year break due to the pandemic!

The festival takes place from September 23rd to 26th and is filled with activities, processions, cultural events, concerts, fireworks and more!

La Mercè is the annual festival (festa major) of the city of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. It has been an official city holiday since 1871, when the local government first organised a program of special activities to observe the Roman Catholic feast day of Our Lady of Mercy, La Mare de Déu de la Mercè in Catalan. Although the actual feast day is September 24, the festivities begin a few days beforehand.

Some of the most important features of the festival were introduced in the year 1902, when parades included papier maché “giants” known as gegants i capgrossos and a popular dance from Empordà that was becoming popular throughout Catalonia: the Sardana. The holiday has enjoyed immense local popularity ever since.

The correfoc is a form of street entertainment where the public interact with fire and devils. Generally these "fire runs" take place in the late evening, follow a set route and involve other festival figures as well as the devils, mainly dragons. The "diables" carry all sorts of firework launchers, such as the revolving "carretilles", vertical "francesos", fixed "sortidors" and cartridges, which they "burn" as they make their way round.
