When considering Unicompartmental Knee Replacement (UKR), patients often inquire about implant types and surgery duration. UKR addresses damage in a single knee compartment, differing from Total Knee Replacement (TKR), which replaces the entire knee joint.

UKR implants are significantly smaller than those used in TKR, leading to a less invasive and potentially less painful procedure. Two primary implant types exist: mobile bearing and fixed bearing. Mobile bearing implants feature a moving plastic insert, designed to reduce wear and enhance mobility, offering a more natural feel. Fixed bearing implants offer a more stable platform. The choice between these should be discussed thoroughly with your surgeon.

The performance of UKR implants is generally excellent. Studies indicate that approximately 95% of patients report positive outcomes 10 years post-surgery, with 91% maintaining good results after 15 years. However, there is a risk of developing arthritis in other knee compartments, which may necessitate a future TKR.

In cases where a primary TKR becomes necessary, it is important to note that primary TKR procedures also boast a high success ratio. Your surgeon will guide you in choosing the most suitable implant and procedure based on your individual needs.
