ABVP welcomes and applauds the determination of the Assam Government, NRC Bureaucracy, and the Narendra Modi led Central Government for adhering to the Supreme Court directed timeline for release of the NRC Data after a meticulous, comprehensive and rigorous process. The non-inclusion of 40 Lakhs people from the provisional data reflects and affirms the gravity of the illegal immigrant crisis in Assam. It reflects the pain, gravity and agony of the people of Assam who have suffered from this crisis. As the opportunity to apply will be available for the non-included on production of the relevant document, the possibility of denial of citizenship to anyone who is legally eligible will not accrue. We must remember that there is a list of 16 documents which could be submitted. Similarly, if someone has an objection with regard to wrong inclusion of someone in NRC, it could be made from the due date.

ABVP had launched a number of campaigns to build movement and sensitize people across India with regard to gravity of the crisis/external aggression by the illegal immigrants of Bangladesh. We have always advocated the policy of ‘detect, delete, deport’ with regard to them. The concern of the minority communities from the Bangladesh is being addressed by the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 being proposed by the Central Government, as it is of utmost importance to differentiate between illegal immigrants and genuine refugees. These genuine refugees (Hindus and others) who are persecuted minorities of Bangladesh and Pakistan should be granted Indian Citizenship according to due procedure.

This is in consonance with the Assam Accord, the Supreme Court’s order in the Sarbananda Sonowal case and as per the procedure laid down by the Supreme Court for identification and preparation of the NRC. The problem is so grave that the Supreme Court has identified it as an attack on India’s sovereignty and amounts to external aggression. As the process is monitored and continues under the supervision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, all of us must have faith in the constitutionality, proprietary and legitimacy of the exercise.

The narrow vote-bank politics by the political parties is condemnable, dangerous and a matter of concern for the unity and Integrity of India. We request them to stop supporting illegal immigrants on the pretext of being a probable vote-bank and in the larger interest of the nation; they must support the Government of Assam and India in peaceful preparation of the NRC data and its resultant application.

ABVP demands that the timeline for the process should be strictly adhered and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is enacted.
