Hey guys,

As some of you might know, I’m devoted to becoming a full-time Workshop artist. And part of that means composing my very own music. After some time of hard work and obtaining some of the most excellent plugins, I decided to share with you what I'm currently working on.

So one day I woke up with a very persistent pirate theme in my head. Inspired by Hans Zimmer’s (and Klaus Badelt’s) magnificent work on the Pirates of the Carribbean soundtrack, I noticed the song I had in my head did not actually exist. This is what drove me to get it out of my head and getting all the ‘piratey’ stuff out of my system. Before I knew it, I was ‘composing’ (still have trouble with this word as I don’t actually write scores) my very own soundtrack for potential use in Dota 2.

The overall style of the pack strives to be energetic, melodic and epic. Not every theme fully classifies as traditional Pirate-theme, because I also want the game to fit the dark and serious style of Dota 2 itself.

I also tried conjure up some actual Dota 2 lore to make the pack fit a bit more into the game. The story would go something like this:

“Amidst the peril of Admiral Kunkka’s desperate struggle against the Demon Fleet, a mysterious man was also present. Of him, naught was known but his name: Ramurath. As a travelling bard, it was his duty to roam the earth and brave the seas, for he had taken upon him the burden of storytelling. In fear of his own life, he took cautious heed of his chaotic surroundings, pledging an ultimate vow to himself. Should he live to tell, he would one day share with all of mankind both the gruesome and heroic tales that befell before his very eyes. As Maelrawn the Tentacular arose from the swirling depths to tear asunder man and ship, he boldly transcribed the events into a musical essence as if it were the last thing he’d do. Ramurath’s existence remains unconfirmed to this very day. All that is to be said is that he kept his vow…”

This theme is played after the first song while browsing through the menu's.

Finally I would like to point out that this is my first self-composed material I’ve ever publicly shared and that I haven’t had any formal education in music theory, arrangement or mixing/mastering. I’m in the process of learning. If you have any suggestions, tips or questions, feel free to help me out!
