MEP Pathway l Methyl Erythritol Phosphate Pathway l Mevalonate - Independent Pathway l DXP Pathway l Deoxy Xylulose Phosphate Pathway

The isoprene units from nature may be obtained by two routes:
by way of intermediates Mevalonic acid or 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate (methylerythritol phosphate; MEP).

For several years, the early parts of the mevalonate pathway were accepted to be typical to the whole range of natual terpenoid derivatives.
Now Scientists are sure that an alternative pathway to IPP(Isopentenyl Pyrophosphate) and DMAPP (Dimethylallyl Pyrophosphate) exists, via MEP(Methyl Erythritol Phosphate).

IPP and DMAPP are precursors for various terpenoid derivatives like hemiterpenes (C5), monoterpenes (C10), sesquiterpenes (C15), diterpenes (C20), sesterterpenes (C25), triterpenes (C30), and tetraterpenes (C40).

This pathway is also called as Mevalonate-independent pathway or deoxyxylulose phosphate pathway.
