Kala is the old-world cotton variety of the
Gossypium Arboreum species.It is the indigenous crop
of Kachchh which grows in adverse conditions and is
totally rain fed that has a high tolerance for both disease and pests, and requires minimal investment. It is both resilient and resurgent in the face of stressful land conditions. Kala is a semi opened boll type which is
picked along with its calyx. Staple length of kala fiber is
18mm-22mm. Kala is mainly grown in Anjar, Mandvi,
Mundra and Vagad regions of Kachchh. Vagad is the
main Kala production area situated in east of Kachchh.
Kalacotton cultivation is mainly practiced by Ahirs and
Patel community and Meghwal community is engaged in
the weaving process.
