ACID RAIN
Burning of coal, petrol and diesel produces carbon dioxide CO2, carbon monoxide CO, oxides of sulphur SO2, oxides of nitrogen NO2, and unburnt hydrocarbons. All oxides escape into the atmosphere. The oxides of nitrogen and sulphur present in the air dissolve in rainwater to produce sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3).

DAMAGING EFFECTS OF THE ACID RAIN

• Acid rain damages the nutrition level of leaves of the plants. • Acid rain promotes corrosion of metallic structures, such as railway bridges, etc.

• Acid rain damages the heritage structures made of marble, cement and/or of lime, i.e., historical monuments such as the Taj Mahal, Coral reef etc. Marble is CaCO3. CaCO3 reacts with acids present in the Acid rain.

• Acid rain harms the aquatic life, i.e., it kills fish and other marine animals and plants.
