Before the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005 was passed in Toronto, Ontario, the security industry in Ontario was far less regulated. After several deaths involving untrained security guards, the province moved to put in place a formal guard training process. This process and the new training requirements for security guards in Ontario are simpler than they sound, I promise.

Before we start, you must at least 18 years old and have a clean criminal record. You must register for and complete the Basic Training Course. The Basic Training Course is offered by many different companies, all of which have had to apply to the Ontario Ministry of Community and Correctional Services, to be approved to teach the course. Make sure your training provider is registered! You can find a list of registered training providers (many in Toronto and Brampton) here.

The curriculum covers these major areas:

Introduction to the Security Industry
The Private Security and Investigative Services Act and Code of Conduct regulation
Basic Security Procedures
Report Writing
Health and Safety
Emergency Response Preparation
Canadian Legal System
Legal Authorities
Effective Communications
Sensitivity Training
Use of Force Theory
You must also obtain Emergency First Aid/CPR certification. Some course providers offer a 40 hour Basic Training Course which includes CPR certification. The other option is to take an approved Workplace Safety Insurance Board Emergency First Aid/ CPR course. If you chose the second option you’ll need to show your Basic Training instructor proof of the completed CPR course.

Be sure to shop around! Training providers set their own prices and some cost more than others, some also offer the course completely online.

Once you’ve completed the Basic Training Course, you’ll be given a completion number. This number will be used to register for Ministry’s test. You can register for the test here.

The next step after passing the test is to apply for an ontario security licence. Processing time is within 30 days. Any Additional questions may be directed to Service Ontario at 1-866-767-7454.

Once you earn you complete training and receive your Ontario Security License it will be time to think about employment. There are several different career paths you can decide on, all rewarding and posing different challenges.

Toronto, Brampton and the GTA

Nightlife

Toronto is known internationally for its vibrant nightlife. Offering many opportunities for freshly licensed ontario security guards. Applying to bars and clubs can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Many of these establishments are licensed to hire security guards directly, meaning you submit your job application directly to the bar or nightclub.

Corporate Site Security

Unlike nightclubs and bars, corporate site security are usually contracted out. In other words, security guards will apply to the security guard companies which bid on these contracts. These positions can lead to a wide array of job placements. You may be tasked to work a desk and do light patrol, or you may be driving in a security vehicle between multiple construction sites ensuring they are secure and safe from trespassers. The jobs are common in the GTA, Toronto, and Brampton, as well as other Ontario cities such as Kitchener/Waterloo and London.

Valuable Transportation (Armoured Truck Driver)

Armoured truck drivers generally work for one of a few companies. Brinks in Mississauga is a major player and deals in secure transportation of cash and other assets. Employees in Ontario who guard the valuables in the vehicle are required to hold a security license and will be required to also obtain a Firearms Possession and Acquisition License Restricted if they are to carry a firearm (common in this segment of the industry).
