The Minitel was an interactive terminal developed in France in the late 1970s and widely deployed starting in 1982. Distributed free of charge by the French postal and telecommunications administration, its initial purpose was to replace the printed phone directory, but it quickly became the gateway to the Télétel network. Télétel was an online communication system that allowed users to access a wide range of services via the telephone network, including directories, messaging, news, bookings, games, and early forms of electronic commerce. Services were reached through numeric codes such as the famous “3615” followed by a service name. The economic model was based on time-based billing, with charges appearing directly on the phone bill, which encouraged the development of a vibrant service ecosystem. Long before the public spread of the Internet, Minitel introduced millions of users to practices that are now commonplace, such as remote information access, online communication, and digital transactions. Despite its technical limitations, including low data speeds and simple graphics, Minitel enjoyed long-lasting success in France. The Télétel network was finally shut down in 2012, closing a pioneering chapter in the history of digital services.
