Cluster Headaches

According to International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD), Cluster Headache is defined as attacks of severe, strictly unilateral pain which is orbital, supraorbital, temporal or in any combination of these sites, lasting 15-180 minutes and occurring from once every other day to eight times a day.

There is a general understanding that this is more common in men than in women, but recent studies have indicated that women do suffer from this painful condition as well. This outcome is shown in a largest study of sex differences in cluster headache carried out by Andrea Carmine Belin and colleagues based on medical records of 874 participants from Swedish hospitals and published in Journal of Neurology (December 2022).
The study shows:

1. More women than men experienced chronic form of Cluster Headache
2. More women than men had longer bouts of Cluster headache
3. More women experienced ptosis_ when the upper eyelid droops over the eye
4. More women experienced restlessness than men
5. Women reported diurnal rhythmicity to their Cluster headaches than men, claiming attacks mostly at night and during early morning hours. Women reported they were morning types and men often saying they were evening types.
6. Men reported alcohol as the most common trigger factor while women reported stress as the most trigger factor.
7. Women also reported lack of sleep as another common trigger than men.
