About Asuka-Fujiwara, for which World Heritage registration is sought
The stage of nation-building in ancient Japan, and the center of ancient Japan: Asuka-Fujiwara.
Japan, influenced by interchange with China and the Korean peninsula for about a century from the end of the Kofun period to the relocation to Heijo-kyo in the late sixth century, integrated and developed traditional culture up to the Kofun period and advanced cultures from East Asia, laying the foundation of the nation.
The area comprises 22 archeological sites such as the former sites of Asuka Palace and Fujiwara Palace, the former sites of Buddhist temples, and burial-mound tombs. These are concentrated in the limited area of Asuka-Fujiwara and give testament to the process of the birth of the nation of Japan by establishing a structure of governance based on the Ritsuryo system. "Archeological sites of Asuka-Fujiwara palaces and associated sites" was listed on the World Heritage Tentative List in 2007. The goal is to achieve registration as a World Heritage site.
