Welcome to The Other Raja Ampat.

This is the Raja Ampat you won't see in a brochure, from a travel agent, or in a scuba diving magazine. It's the Raja Ampat you likely won't come across as a visitor to the region.

Yet it is THIS Raja Ampat that is threatening the abundant and healthy reefs that the region is known for.

What you can clearly see in this video is the coral rubble that remains after human interference (in the form of coastal development, dynamite fishing, cyanide fishing or coral excavation for building materials) has caused severe coral degradation. This coral rubble cannot, and will not, recover without assistance, with the substrate being to unstable for young coral polyps to settle and grow... a scenario which ultimately leads to the creation of even more rubble.

Given many reefs in Raja Ampat exist on a slope, over time, as this rubble layer increases in thickness, it becomes too heavy, and slides - avalanche style - onto healthy primary reefs below, at best causing some abrasion, at worst, smothering them.

It is this issue we aim to address through our Yaf Keru reef restoration program; by carefully assessing and identifying those areas most at risk, we restore degraded areas, and in doing so PROTECT the primary, healthy reef below.

The area you see in this video is part degraded reef - extending over 3kms! - we are currently surveying for our next reef restoration project.
